Throughout my life, many people that I have met have shared a common philosophical idea that: “Everything happens for a reason”. It’s a comforting idea that many people hold onto in times of uncertainty. Well, at one point, I too was deeply immersed into this belief system. Like many others, I embraced the notion that everything unfolds according to some grand plan, particularly after reading Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist”, sometime around 2010. Oh! What an inspiring story it was, filled with hopefulness and optimism about life — those were my exact words whenever someone asked me about the book.

It was a comforting idea, one I embraced without much question, until certain experiences in my life made me reevaluate the validity of this belief. This shift in perspective wasn’t abrupt; rather, it was a gradual one, shaped by a plethora of experiences and introspection on the events that occurred in my life. Today, I would like to share my personal evolution of belief on this matter and why I no longer subscribe to the idea that everything happens for a reason.
